Telemedicine

Necessity for Telemedicine in Ophthalmology

Hokkaido is the Northernmost Island in Japan and covers such an immense area that as many as thirteen airports are used for local travel. However, it is the harsh winters with heavy snowfall that create major commuting problems for its residents.

It is even in these conditions that seriously ill patients must somehow get to the nearest hospital. It is especially true in the case of Ophthalmology that the patient can not travel alone and usually makes a visit to Asahikawa Medical College Hospital with a family member or friend.

Our first goal then is that the patient should not have to come to us; we should be able to come to the patient. If this can become possible then it goes further to say that there will be a choice as to the most suitable hospital at the most convenient time in treating patients for check-ups, diagnosis, treatments, and operations.

Telemedicine can be utilized not only for diagnosis to patients living in remote areas but is also possible for operations.
